In two news reports from 1994 and 1995, Cohan falsely stated that he had been a business student during his time at Arizona State.
In May 2007 Cohan was reported to be fighting a tax-evasion case in federal court following the events of his sale in 1998 of Sonic Communications for more than $200 million.
In the wake of such criticism and controversy, he finally sold the Warriors to Peter Guber and Joe Lacob for $450 million in July 2010.
Cohan assumed control of the team in the month of October 1994, prior to the 1994-95 season. He paid an unspecified sum of $130 million. He also helped in the renovation of the Warriors arena (now called Oakland Arena). In Cohan’s time the team had only two winning seasons and a journey to the playoffs over 16 seasons.
