Chloe Noelle Magee (born 29 November 1988) is a Irish pro- badminton player. She represented Ireland at the Olympic Games for three consecutive times in 2008 Beijing as well as 2012 London and Rio de Janeiro. In the 2008 Summer Olympics at Beijing she was first Irish women to take home a match of badminton in the Olympics. Her name has been referred to by some as “the poster girl for Irish badminton”. Together with her twin brother Sam Magee, she clinched the silver medal in the European Championships, became Ireland’s first medal ever during the European Badminton Championship. They also picked up silver medals in the 2019 and 2015 European Games.
As of 2009 Magee took part in Magee competed in the World Championships in Hyderabad, India she lost in the opening round against Japanese second Ai Goto by a score of 21-13 21, 9.
She lost 16-21, 21-18, 21-14, to Hongyan Pi and exited the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Bill O’Herlihy sparked controversy while covering Chloe Magee’s progress at the 2012 Summer Olympics by suggesting badminton was “a mainly Protestant sport”. RTÉ confirmed it received complaints about O’Herlihy’s sectarian remarks on live television. The remarks prompted Magee to inform Highland Radio: “We need to remember what the Olympics is all about. I don’t think it is any different from any other sport. There are people here from all over the world and from many different religions.”
Magee played for Ireland in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China at the age of 19. Magee became the first Irish women to take home a badminton game at the Olympics by beating Estonian Kati Tolmoff with an 18-21, 21-18 and 21-19 in the opening round of women’s singles. She was eliminated following a loss in the second match of round, 12-21, 14-21 to the world’s number one Jun Jae- youn from South Korea. “I have loads to improve on and I will take away a lot from this,” Magee declared following the match.
