General Hospital were planning to cast another actress to portray the role of Nelle Benson, since Lanier was busy with another TV show (Kingdom) at that time, but Laura Wright and Frank Valentini were adamant that if anyone should be playing Nelle it should be Lanier, so the storyline was put on hold for her. In 2016, she returned to General Hospital, but this time in a brand new contract role of Nelle Hayes. She debuted on August 8, 2016. In November 2016, she had booked an independent film, Gorman, also titled Quail Lake, where she plays the lead role of Brittany. Lanier reprised her General Hospital role briefly in October

2018. She reprised the role of Nelle Benson the week of June 10, 2019, on General Hospital.
