Gillan was the chairperson of the Bow Group in 1987-1988 and unsuccessfully ran for her Greater Manchester Central seat in 1989’s European Parliament election. Gillan got elected into the House of Commons in the general election of 1992 to represent the Buckinghamshire seat of Chesham and Amersham. She was elected to the seat with the majority of 22,220. She remains the seat’s MP since. Her first speech was delivered on June 25, 1992.

In July 1995 Gillan joined the government as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Department for Education and Employment. In this role she expanded the specialist schools programme to include arts and sports colleges, something she considers to be one of her proudest achievements in politics. After the 1997 general election—with the Conservatives now in Opposition—she became a spokesperson for Trade and Industry as well as for Education in June 1997 (with there being so few Conservative MP’s left that several held more than one shadow post) and then, from June 1998, shadow minister for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and International Development. From September 2001 until June 2003 she served in the whip’s office. In December 2003 she became Shadow Minister for Home, Constitutional and Legal Affairs.

Gillan represented the British Islands and the Mediterranean on the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) from 2000 until 2003 and was later elected treasurer of the CPA from 2003 until 2006.

In her early days in the Parliament, Gillan served on the Select committees for Science and Technology (1992-1995) as well as the committee for Procedure (1994-1995). Gillan was also Secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Space and was a committee member on the board of the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology in 1995. In 1994, she was appointed the Personal Secretary of the Parliamentary Leader to House of Lords and Lord Privy Seal Viscount Cranborne.

Dame Cheryl Elise Kendall Gillan DBE MP (born 21 April 1952) is a British Conservative Party politician and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Buckinghamshire constituency that includes Chesham as well as Amersham located in Buckinghamshire. She was Secretary of State in Wales from 2010 until 2012.

Gillan began working for Gillan joined the International Management Group in 1977 before becoming a director for her first film for the British Film Year in 1984. In 1986, she was promoted to as a senior marketing consultant at Ernst & Young, becoming the marketing director for Kidsons Impey 1991-1993. She was the Shadow Welsh Secretary from 2005 to 2010, assuming the cabinet position of Secretary of State for Wales after the 2010 general election until the reshuffle in September 2012. She was awarded a damehood in the New Year’s Honours list 2018.
