Cheng Chih-lung (born 29 August 1969) is a Taiwanese basketball coach and former basketball player. He is also a former politician who was an elected participant in the Legislative Yuan of the Republic of China.
Cheng was a small forward on Cheng was a small forward for the Chinese Taipei national basketball team and began his career as a the shooting guard of his pro teams within the Taiwan’s Chinese Basketball Alliance and mainland China’s Chinese Basketball Association mostly in the latter half in the latter half of 20th century. In his prime his time, he was widely regarded for being one of the top offensive athletes in Asia. He was also the very first Taiwanese player to be a part of the Chinese Basketball Association. After a brief, but tumultuous political career that ended with his resignation as an athlete in 2001, Cheng is back in basketball as a coach the Taiwan’s Super Basketball League since 2007. (He also played for China’s National Basketball League in 2012.)
Following that the Taiwanese professional league and also his club of home that he played for, The Hung Kuo Elephants, came to an end due to financial issues during 1999. Cheng was able to join the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association in mainland China. Alongside the young Yao Ming, Cheng helped the young Sharks make it into the semifinals, for the very first time in the history of the franchise but they were defeated by the almost impervious Bayi Rockets. As part of the Chinese Taipei youth team, Cheng Chih-lung, who was just teen, was the two-time scoring champion at the FIBA’s Under-18 Asian Champion. At 19 he became the youngest player of the Chinese Taipei adult team and led the team achieve a third place finish in the FIBA Asia Championship 1989–Taiwan’s best performance at the event since the resumption of international sporting involvement in mid-’80s. From the time he was 19 until 1998, Cheng was a member of the Taiwan national squad at various international competitions and establish the best records of the team at all major events in the region, including winning Taiwan’s debut gold medal for basketball for males during the 1997 East Asian Games. As the star player representative for Taiwan, Cheng was selected to the All-Tournament Team for the William Jones Cup international tournament several times. He was also selected was added to make the FIBA Asian All-Star roster in 1998.
Initially dubbed “Doctor” after Dr. J by his American coach, John Nealon, due to his ability to jump Cheng Chih-lung later earned another name, “the Loach- Dragon” (Ni Qiu Long ) due to his smart play style. A steady long and mid- range shooter Cheng is also known for shrewd offensive running, skillful moves and excellent body coordination which allowed the player to “bore” through the defense like a dojo-like loach and score from a variety of directions and angles. As the Hung Kuo Elephant was born, he became the highest-paid basketball player from Taiwan in the country. He was also the foundation for the “Hung Kuo dynasty” from 1996 to 1998, when the team was awarded three consecutive championships for Taiwan’s pro Chinese Basketball Alliance (Zhong Hua Zhi Yelan Qiu Lian Meng ). He was voted the most valued player (MVP) during the 1995-96 season as well as in 1998’s championship series in which he was the sole player to bring his team to their third championship in an 1-3 loss in the best-of-7 series against the strong Kaohsiung Mars.
In the capacity of legislator, nevertheless, Cheng Chih-lung was given the credit of working with the government’s Sports Affairs Council to give birth to the Super Basketball League, which started to function in 2003.
