Chendra Panatan (born 7 January 1970, Jakarta, Indonesia) is an Indonesian artist from Indonesia. He started his training in dance with Sumber Cipta Ballet Jakarta and pursued further studies in Ecola de la Dance Geneva, Lines Contemporary Ballet, San Francisco United States, Concordia University, Montreal Canada, Limon Institute, NYC – USA and the Internationale Sommerakademie des Tanzes in Koln, Germany.

Experienced dancing with numerous international and local choreographers, including Farida Oetoyo Iko Sidharta and Sukardji Sriman, Yanti Aranditio, Maxine Heppner, Dislav Zielienski (Canada), Edmund Gaerlan (Philiphines), Olivier Patey (France), Jurgen Otte (Ducth), Howard W. Lark (United States), Joh Seongjoo (South Korea) and Angela Liong (Singapore). He was a part of major dance festivals, including the Indonesian Dance Festival, The Arts Summit Indonesia, GKJ International Festival, the inauguration of the Esplanade-Singapore in Melbourne as well as Asia Comments Asia Comments Copenhagen. A professional performer the company he was with was Maxine Heppner, and Dancers in Toronto in 1997, Canada in 1997. He co-founded Kreativitat Indonesia – the company for contemporary dance that is based in Jakarta. Additionally, he is founding and director artistic of TARI Indonesia and METAdomus which was established in 2002 to help promote Indonesian Performing Arts. The activities and productions of TARIIndonesia are devoted to the growth of Indonesia Performing Arts. TARIIndonesia is the initiator of the first dance-on-screen festival ‘danc(E)motion” which took place in Jakarta during 2005. METAdomus is the newest Contemporary Indonesia Music Group, which has performed in various cities across Indonesia as well as Nederland during 2002. He is currently an instructor in dance and in the capacity of an arts director, in addition to creating his own dance work. Chendra received an invitation to take part in the tanzplatforum event at Dusserdorf, Germany last Feb 2004 as the Indonesian representative. Being an Arts Manager Chendra was awarded a grant by Ford Foundation through Asialink and Kelola Foundation to do arts (dance) residency in Australia together with One Extra Dance Company in Sydney and TasDance in Tasmania(ce) The artist has collaborated with internationally-renowned composers, including David del Puerto and Santiago Lanchares. Since 2005, Chendra has been working closely with Indonesian well-known composer and pianist Ananda Sukarlan, producing works that have been performed in Europe as well as Indonesia. Together , they created the first monumental Balinese dance “Kecak” in Spain, that had a major impact on the music and dance scene in Spain. A lot of Spanish music composers since written music inspired by the music that were a part of Kecak in honor of Ananda Sukarlan.

The first of his contemporary works S A S A won the 1st possible prize at the inaugural contemporary choreography competition, Gedung Kesenian Jakarta Awards, 1997. CONFLICT, ESCape (dance film project) as well as P E R (a dance theater) and P E R – T I (a dance theater ) were developed while he was studying in The Victorian College of The Arts, University of Melbourne in Australia to earn his master’s degree in choreography. Exodus premiered in The Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.

His projects have been backed by international and national organizations like Arts Network Asia, Australian Indonesian Institute, Ford Foundation, Jakarta Arts Council, British Council, Goethe Institut, Kelola Foundation and Asialink. After completing his choreography studies in the Victorian College of The Arts, Melbourne University in 2000 In 2000, he was awarded the Chevening Scholarship to complete his master of arts in choreography from Middlesex University in London. Middlesex University, London in 2007. His major choreography, HAYATI, was created during the Chevening period, and premiered in Jakarta in the year 2008. In 2009, he and Ananda Sukarlan, he devised his Bibirku Bersujud dance Bibirmu which is a brand new idea of dance and music inspired by a poem of the same title from Hasan Aspahani, performed at the Jakarta New Year’s Concert 2010. He also worked together with Ananda Sukarlan in two of his operas: Clara (2014, which was named with the Best Performing Arts 2014 by the Tempo Magazine) and Tumirah (to be performed in 2017) Based on stories written by Seno Gumira Ajidarma. He also founded the Yayasan Musik Sastra Indonesia (Indonesian Classical Music Foundation) along with Ananda Sukarlan, Pia Alisjahbana (founder of the Femina Group) and Dedi Panigoro of the Medco Group.
