Since 2010 Richie has been working for YouthBuild USA, a youth and community development organization based at Somerville, Massachusetts. She is also Chair of the board for Higher Ground Boston, as an advisor to Mothers for Justice and Equality and is on the advisory committee for The Haiti Fund at The Boston Foundation.

Richie was a member of in the 5th Suffolk District in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1995 until her resignation in 1999 to take on the role of Chief Executive Officer in the Department of Neighborhood Development for the City of Boston. When she was a new legislator she was elected vice-chair of Boston’s State House delegation and chair of the Housing and Urban Development Committee it was it was the first time in years that a freshman was elected to the position of a leader. As a state representative, Richie introduced the passage of a $296 million bond bill that would help build low- cost housing.
The appointment of Richie to the position of Chief of Housing and Director of the Department of Neighborhood Development coincided with Mayor Thomas Menino’s choice to make the position an official cabinet post. She was at the DND until 2007, when she was appointed Governor Deval Patrick’s chief advisor for state, federal and community issues. She left the DND in 2009 and quit to join the Patrick administration to be Director of Executive for Governor Deval Patrick’s re-election commission.
In 2014, she was named as a Commissioner of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination by Governor Patrick.
