In 2005, during the United States Grand Prix, Whiting was at the center of a controversy brought on by the tyres that Michelin brought to Indianapolis not being safe to use. Michelin provided tyres with new specifications that would replace the seven customers Formula One teams’ equipment or requested Whiting to put chicanes inside the turn 13 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway instead. He declined on the basis that the new specification could violate the rules or that the chicane would unfairly affect teams that could race in safety on the current track.
At the 2019 British Grand Prix, the FIA decided that his son Justin would start the race.
On the morning of 14 March 2019, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, three days before the season opening Australian Grand Prix of the 2019 Formula One season, Whiting suffered a pulmonary embolism and died, aged 66. He predeceased his three children from two marriages.

He was Director of FIA Formula One Race Director Safety Delegate Permanent Starter, and Head of the F1 Technical Department, in which capacity he was responsible for the logistics of every F1 Grand Prix, inspected cars in parc ferme prior to the race and was in charge of enforcing FIA rules, and supervised the race’s lights. race.
