The year 1987 was the time he was eighth in the London Marathon in 2:10.32. He also ran in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, coming 6th.
He was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Sunderland in 2012.
In November 2019 he published a book Stop Feeding Us Lies: How Health and Happiness Come to Those Who Seek the Truth which examines dietary recommendations and lifestyle approaches which he analyses as being causes of high levels of obesity, type 2 diabetes and other illnesses.
In 1985, he established an PB and an English Marathon record of 2:08.33 (which was in effect until 2014) when he was second to Steve Jones in the London Marathon. Third fastest British marathon runner behind Jones as well as Mo Farah. He was the representative of England at the marathon competition in 1986 at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Spedding finished fourth of the 10,000 meters representing England in the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Spedding was also Britain’s Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) 10,000 metres champion in 1983, with the speed of 28:08.12. It was his first marathon, his Houston Marathon in 1984, which he won with “the thickness of a vest”.
Spedding was the next to win in the London Marathon in 1984 and the bronze medal of Great Britain in the marathon in the 1984 Summer Olympics that took place at Los Angeles, United States and finishing 2 seconds ahead of gold medallist John Treacy. It was, however, the very first British Olympic Marathon medal in 20 years, and also the most recent one awarded by Britain (male or female) but it was just one of the 16 British medals for the sport that year and could not get the attention it deserved.
Spedding is a pharmacist by trade. In September 2009, he published an autobiography of his running career called From Last to First.
