After receiving the PhD at MIT at the end of 1998 Isbell became a part of AT&T Labs Research. Research. Charles Lee Isbell Jr. is an American computer scientist, researcher, and educator. He is a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology College of Computing since 2002 and, since July 2019, serves as the college’s dean. His research interests are in artificial intelligence and machine learning including human-centered and interactive AI. He has published more than 100 scientific studies. Alongside his academic, Isbell has been an advocate for improving the accessibility of and diversity in higher education.
In Georgia Tech, Isbell pursued reforms in the field of computing education. He was awarded an honor in the year 2006, for his research on Threads Georgia Tech’s structure principle for computing curriculum. He also received an award in 2014 for being the creator for Georgia Tech’s Georgia Tech Online Master of Science in Computer Science, a MOOC-supported degree program that has garnered global attention and was considered to be the first in its class. Isbell was a witness before Congress on the subject. The year 2008 was the time that Isbell was appointed Associate Dean at the College. In 2012, four years later He was appointed the Senior Associate Dean. Later, in 2017, he was an Executive Associate Dean.
