He is an active participant in the Democratic Party, part of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe.
In 2009 Goerens is an official part of the Committee on Development and of the Subcommittee on Human Rights. In the wake of this year’s European Parliament election He was appointed Vice-Chair of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs.
He was Minister for Cooperation, Humanitarian Action, and Defence within the government of Jean-Claude Juncker starting on 7 August 1999 to 31 July 2004. He also served briefly as Minister of Foreign Affairs from the 20th July 2004 to 31 July 2004. The posts were vacated in the event that Juncker was required to create a new coalition government following the 2004 elections to the parliamentary.
