Drennan was ordained as a Priest at Rome in the Diocese of Christchurch on June 14, 1996. Drennan was also ordained an Ascribed Rosminian and is part of the Institute of Charity (Rosminians) as priest of the diocesan church. Drennan succeeded to the position on February 22, 2012 after the resignation of Peter Cullinane. The ceremony of his installation took place in the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit on March 17, 2012.
Drennan was a member of the executive committee of the Federation of Catholic Bishops Conferences of Oceania and a bishop member of the board of the New Zealand Catholic Education Office Ltd. He served as a member of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference Commission until his resignation in October 2019.
