Born on August 4, 1955 at Yankton, South Dakota, Gemar joined the U.S. Army in January 1973. He was commissioned on June 11 the 11th of June 1973 following his graduation of Scotland Public High School, Scotland, South Dakota. In November 1973 Gemar received a commission to join the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in which he was given an appointment for the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School located at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and then an Department of the Army appointment to be a part of the United States Military Academy Class of 1979.

Gemar was the first to fly on his first mission. Gemar was part of the STS-38 team of five that was launched at night at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida on November 15, 1990. The five-day mission was a time when the crew members performed Department of Defense operations. After orbiting the Earth over 117 hours, the very first Shuttle recovery mission in Florida since 1985 Space Shuttle Atlantis and her crew returned to Kennedy Space Center. Kennedy Space Center on November 20th in 1990.

Gemar’s most recent mission was STS-62 aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, which launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on March 4, 1994. This microgravity science and technology demonstration mission carried the United States Microgravity Payload (USMP-2) and the Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology (OAST-2) payloads. Sixty experiments or investigations were conducted in many scientific and engineering disciplines including: materials science, human physiology, biotechnology, protein crystal growth, robotics, structural dynamics, atmospheric ozone monitoring and spacecraft glow. During the spacecraft glow investigation, Columbia’s orbital altitude was lowered to 105 nautical miles (194 km), the lowest ever flown by a Space Shuttle. STS-62, the second longest Space Shuttle mission to date, concluded after 13 days, 23 hours, and 16 minutes, following 224 orbits of the Earth with a landing at the Kennedy Space Center on March 18, 1994, after traveling 5.8 million miles.

After receiving an Associate of Science degree with a major in Engineering, the student enrolled in an Infantry Officers Basic Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, the Initial Entry Rotary Wing Aviation Course, and the Fixed Wing Multi-Engine Aviators Course both located at Fort Rucker, Alabama. In October of 1980 his unit was assigned to the 24th Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, where the unit remained until January 1st in 1985. While at the Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Field, he was the assistant officer for flight operations, and flight platoon leader for 24th Combat Aviation Battalion, the commander of Wright Army Airfield, and the head of the Operations Branch, for Hunter Army Airfield.

Charles Donald “Sam” Gemar (born August 4 1955) is an American former astronaut from NASA and an lieutenant colonel in the United States Army. Gemar has flown in three Space Shuttle missions (STS-38, STS-48 and STS 62). Gemar has completed 385 rounds around the Earth and has spent more than 581 hours of space. Gemar has also held various positions within NASA and NASA, including as a CAPCOM member for Shuttle missions. Gemar is the very first NASA astronaut born within the State of South Dakota.

Gemar was selected to be a part of NASA on June 15, 1985, Gemar was enrolled in the one-year training and assessment program before becoming an astronaut in July of 1986. Gemar is qualified to be assigned as an Mission Specialist for future Space Shuttle flight crews. Since then, he has been assigned various technical positions for Space Shuttle operations. Space Shuttle Program, including test of flight software at Space Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory (SAIL); flight software testing in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory (SAIL) as well as launch support functions within Kennedy Space Center Kennedy Space Center; spacecraft communication (CAPCOM) for the control of missions for Space Shuttle missions; Chief of Astronaut appearances. Gemar was a pilot three times, and spent more than 500 hours space. Gemar was on STS-38 (November 15 to 15 1990), STS-48 (September 12-18 1991) and STS-62 (March 4-18, 1994).).

Gemar then served on the five-man crew of STS-48 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, which launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on September 12, 1991. During 81 orbits of the Earth, the crew successfully deployed the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), designed to study the Earth’s upper atmosphere on a global scale thus providing scientists with their first complete data set on the upper atmosphere’s chemistry, winds and energy inputs, in addition to conducting numerous secondary experiments ranging from growing protein crystals, to studying how fluids and structures react in weightlessness. This five-day mission concluded with a landing at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on September 18, 1991. Mission duration was 128 hours.
