Charles Joseph “Charlie” Camarda (born May 8th 1952, in Queens, New York) is an American engineer and NASA astronaut, who completed his very first mission into space on the Space Shuttle mission STS-114. He was the Director of Engineering Development at NASA Langley Research Center.
Camarda is still working for NASA and has developed an engineering pedagogical method called EPIC which explores ways to design a mission that can be an integrated training project. Camarda has performed with EPIC on several occasions, and was in Finland in the year 2018.
Camarda has seven patents for different inventions, including NASA’s Heat-Pipe Cooled Sandwich Panel, which was named among the top 100 innovations in technology in 1983, according to Industrial Research Magazine. With more than two decades of working in various Shuttle technological applications, Camarda decided to make the decision to change his career path, which brought him in closer proximity to his job and achieving his goals. Camarda was appointed as a mission specialist in the year 1996. He was also an instructor in NYU Poly.

Camarda is from Ozone Park, Queens, New York and graduated from high- performance academic and athletic institution archbishop molloy high school back in 1970. In describing his early fascination in space travel, Camarda said, “It was a time when spaceflight was so intriguing. It was natural for me to want to be an astronaut, to dream of being an astronaut.” He has a daughter named Chelsea Camarda Morton, one grandchild, Vincent Cash Morton, and one granddaughter, Kennedy Grace Morton.
Camarda was a graduate of Nativity B.V.M. and attended the Archbishop Molloy Secondary School. He earned an undergraduate diploma in aerospace engineering at Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1974. He also earned a master’s degree of engineering sciences from George Washington University in 1980 and a doctorate in engineering for aerospace from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the year 1990.
