The basketball player’s career came to an end prematurely because of complications caused by Guillain-Barre syndrome , which he was suffering from during his time playing with Iraklis. Markopoulos was paralyzed during the journey to Thessaloniki to Lulea in 2001.
Markopoulos was a part of the junior national team of Greece. In Greece’s junior national side winning Bronze in the 2000 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship. The average was 13.6 per game, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game during the championship.
