James Chandler Shepherd (born August 25 1992) is an American professional baseball relief pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles organization. He was a part of Major League Baseball (MLB) for Baltimore in the year 2019.
Shepherd started his 2016 season with Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, where he went 1-0 in the league with 1.80 ERA and seven saves in 14 appearances. He also had the 0.80 WHIP and a .140 in batting average and striking out 39 times and walking 10 over 30 innings. Shepherd was then promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox in June. Between May 2 and June 29 he had an uninterrupted streak of 23/3 scoreless innings between the two seasons. Shepherd ended 2016 with a record of 2-2 and an 2.81 ERA.
Shepherd’s five-day odyssey ended when he was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles and optioned to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides on May 22, 2019. After his first promotion to the majors on July 30 lasted only one day, he returned to the Orioles on August 13 and made his MLB debut that night by allowing a run while pitching the last four innings in an 8–3 away loss to the New York Yankees. After three starts in five appearances with a 6.63 ERA and 1.526 WHIP, he was outrighted off the Orioles’ 40-man roster on September 30.
He was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs and assigned to the Double-A Tennessee Smokies one day later on May 18, 2019. His time with the Cubs organization lasted only four days without playing for the Smokies because the Cubs’ attempt to sneak him through waivers in order to transfer him off the 40-man roster was not successful.
Shepherd was a senior in his final year. Shepherd is ranked in the 2014 Baseball America Preseason NCAA Top-100 players (No. 70). Then, he made 16 pitching appearances, finishing with a record of 5-5 and an 3.66 ERA in 76 1/3 innings, which included nine starts and one save game.

Shepherd was a student at Lawrence County High School in Louisa, Kentucky. He played three years from the University of Kentucky from 2012 until 2014. In his junior year, Shepherd was sidelined by an injury to his forearm that required his absence for 3 weeks of baseball, but he was back in the relief position for nine games and then made nine starts. He posted three wins and having a 3.83 score, and one save. He also won Baseball America recognition as the best player for the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League and was named pitcher of the season and was named to the PGCBL first team and Perfect Game USA first team as a player of the Amsterdam Mohawks
Shepherd was chosen for the Red Sox in the 13th round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Kentucky. Shepherd began his professional journey at the end of 2014 for the short season Class A Lowell Spinners, where he was 4-3 with an 4.05 ERA in 16 games and was mostly a long reliever for 33 1/3 innings. Shepherd was promoted to the Class A Greenville Drive in 2015, and performed admirably with three wins with having a 1.23 ERA and one save in 14/3 innings. However, Shepherd played the majority of the time playing for the class A Advanced Salem Red Sox, posting an 0-2 mark with an 3.61 ERA and six saves in 28 games. This included an impressive 6.57 strikeout to walk ratio (46-to-7) in 52/3 innings. In the later part of the year the pitcher also performed very well during his time in the Arizona Fall League with the Scottsdale Scorpions, appearing in 11 games while making it a 1-1 record with an 3.97 ERA and one save in 11/3 innings. In all, he was 4-3, with an 3.22 ERA and eight saves in 78/3 innings to cover three different levels during his debut professional season.
With Pawtucket in 2017, Shepherd had a 1–5 record with 4.07 ERA in 34 appearances (one start) and 59 ⁄3 innings pitched. The Red Sox added Shepherd to their 40-man roster after the 2017 season. With Pawtucket during 2018, Shepherd appeared in 25 games (all starts), compiling a 7–10 record with 3.89 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 129 ⁄3 innings pitched.
