In the course of investigations into Videocon poor loans, she was ordered to do so by the Board of ICICI Bank to take indefinite leave. It was discovered that the Central Bureau of Investigation named Chanda Kochhar and her husband as the beneficiaries in the financial scam. In the Justice B N Shrikrishna probe panel concluded that Kochhar had violated the ICICI Bank’s Code of Conduct, following which her employment was terminated and all of benefits and entitlements removed. Following her departure, Sandeep Bakhshi, who was acting as interim CEO and Managing Director, was appointed the CEO and MD full-time.
The year was 1996. Kochhar led the newly established Infrastructure Industry Group of ICICI Bank with the aim to develop specialized industry experts in the areas of telecom, power, and transportation.
Under Kochhar’s leadership, ICICI Bank started building the nascent retail business in 2000 focusing largely on technology, innovation, process engineering and expansion of distribution and scale. In April 2001, she took over as executive director.

Kochhar was born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan in a Hindu Sindhi family. She attended St. Angela Sophia School, Jaipur. After that, she relocated to Mumbai and joined Jai Hind College and earned the bachelor’s degree in commerce at Mumbai’s University of Mumbai. After graduation from the university in 1982, she pursued a degree in cost accounting with the Institute of Cost Accountants of India as well as later pursuing master of management studies degree at the University of Mumbai from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies.
