Chan Santokhi is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on February 3, 1959 in Lelydorp, Suriname. Chan Santokhi was born on 3 February 1959 in Lelydorp located in district Suriname (now called District Wanica). He was raised in the countryside, the youngest of a family of nine. His father was employed in the port in Paramaribo while his mom was employed as an assistant to the shop in Lelydorp.

On the 10th of September, 2008, Santokhi filed a lawsuit against Bouterse for slander, insult and defamation, as Bouterse had claimed that Santokhi had connections in the criminal world of drug dealers as well as other drug users. On September 23, 2008, the court found that the allegations were not supported by evidence and orally ordered Bouterse to issue a correction and also to pay a penalty of SRD 100,000 for every day that Bouterse was not able to fulfill the sentence. On the same day Bouterse made a correction in De West where he admitted that the allegations were false.

At the 2010 parliamentary elections Santokhi had, despite being placed low on the voters list of the Progressive Reform Party, second most votes nationwide (Dési Bouterse had the most). In July of that year he was appointed as presidential candidate on behalf of the ruling Nieuw Front political combination (the Progressive Reform Party is part of Nieuw Front). Santokhi’s opponent in the presidential elections was Dési Bouterse. Because Bouterse cooperated with Ronnie Brunswijk and Paul Somohardjo, his political party had 36 seats, while Nieuw Front had only fourteen. Consequently Bouterse was elected ninth President of Suriname.

On 3 July 2011, Santokhi was elected as chairman of the Vooruitstrevende Hervormings Partij (VHP) (Progressive Reform Party). The Progressive Reform Party, which was once a Hindustani party, has grown, since the appointment of Santokhi as chairman, into a multi-ethnical party which, according to current statistics, is the second biggest political party in Suriname. Currently, with eight seats in the parliament, the VHP is the biggest opposition party.

In September the year 2005 Santokhi took office as the Minister for Justice and Police on behalf of the Progressive Reform Party. The time he was as Minister was marked with a massive enforcement of criminality, focusing on drug trafficking, as well as an uncompromising, no-nonsense police force that enforced law and law and order. He was dubbed sheriff, which he received from Desi Bouterse.

Chandrikapersad “Chan” Santokhi (born 3 February 1959) is a Surinamese politician and former police chief.

After Santokhi earned his VWO certificate from the Algemene Middelbare School highschool in Paramaribo He was awarded the opportunity to study with a scholarship within the Netherlands. From 1978 to 1982, he attended the Police Academy of the Netherlands in Apeldoorn. After finishing his studies, in 1982, he came back in Suriname in September of 1982 to join the police. From at the age of 23 Santokhi was police inspectors within Geyersvlijt as well as Wanica until his appointment in 1989 as the head of the criminal investigations department in the country. In 1991, he was named chief police commissioner.

Santokhi, who for fifteen years was the official representative of the Comisión Interamericana para el Control del Abuso de Drogas (CICAD) (Inter American Drug Abuse Control Commission), was chosen on 6 December 2010, as president of this organization for one year. CICAD is an autonomous body of the Organization of American States, that coordinates the drug policy of the Western Hemisphere. In 2009 Santokhi was, also for one year, the vice- president of this organization.
