Following in 2008, the Sichuan Earthquake in Wenchuan County, Chai went on the scene to stay alongside refugees to witness their harsh living conditions. Then, she compiled her experiences into a show named Seven Days at Yangping. The program helped her establish herself as a TV reporter.

Some controversy arose surrounding Chai in 2013. After marrying famous photographer Zhao Jia she became pregnant, but she chose not to deliver her child in a hospital in China. Instead, she travelled to the United States before it was time for her to give birth. Some people pointed out that Chai had once declared that if she were to have a baby in the future that she would let her baby belong to China. Due to this issue, many people think that Chai directly contradicted herself.

The year 2001 was the time Chai began her role as host, reporter and anchor on Horizon Connection (Chinese: Dong Fang Shi Kong Shi Kong Lian Xian pinyin: fang shi kongshi kong the xian ) in CCTV. In 2002, she was an investigative reporter she reported on SARS, the acute and severe respiratory syndrome (SARS) crisis and appeared on camera wearing white protective clothes and looking thin and pale.

Chai is a native of Linfen, Shanxi, China. She was in 1991 when she began her studies in the Changsha Railway Institute (now known as Central South University or “Zhongnan University” Railway Campus) located in Changsha, Hunan Province, majoring in accounting. As a student, she sent a letter to a host of the station Hunan Arts Radio, asking: “Could you help me fulfill my dream?” The host gave an interview, and she was then appointed to work for the station. After graduating at the age of 15, she became the host of the radio program Gentle Moonlight (Chinese: Ye Se Wen Rou (pinyin: ye se rou ). A few years after, aged 22 she enrolled at Beijing Broadcasting Institute (now known as Communication University of China) to study television production and host a second Hunan radio show, New Youth, (Chinese: Xin Qing Nian Pinyin: xin qing Nanci ). In 2001 she was recruited by China Central Television (CCTV) as a presenter and reporter as well as doing a master’s degree in Fine Arts at Peking University.

Since 1995 Chai was enlisted in the broadcast industry as a host on radio from Hunan Province. From 2001 until 2013, she was employed by China Central Television (CCTV) as an extremely well-respected host and investigative reporter. In 2012 she published her autobiography, called Insight (Chinese: Kan Jian ; pinyin: the word kanjian ) The book has sold more than one million copies.

On September 19, 2009, a blogger, Wujinger1 (Chinese: 吴静儿1 ; pinyin: wú jìng er yī ), posted a false article, Famous CCTV hostess Chai Jing arrested today on suspicion of taking bribes. The next day, Chai herself blogged a denial of the rumor. Several months later, on July 13, 2010, Wujinger1 ran another false article, CCTV hostess Chai Jing was taken away by the procuratorate again today, alleging that she was again being investigated on corruption charges. It was later discovered that Wujinger1 was Wu Zhibo, who wanted to seek attention. He apologized to Chai, saying she was his idol, and he wanted the public to know more about Chai.
