Chad Mayes (born April 23 1977) is a American politician within the California State Assembly. The independent politician is, representing the 42nd district that covers areas of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Prior to his election into the State Assembly, he was a Yucca Valley City Councilman.

in 2014, Mayes candidly ran for California State Assembly to succeed the term- limited Republican Brian Nestande, who failed to win a seat in Congress the previous year. Mayes defeated the former Palm Springs Police Chief Gary Jeandron in the primary and was elected to the State Assembly in November 2014 with 57.3 percent of the votes. Mayes was named as Vice-Chair of the Assembly Human Services Committee and an active part of the Committees on Governmental Organization, Insurance and Rules, as and the Special Committee on Legislative Ethics. Mayes was selected to be a member of his position on the Select Committee on Renewable Energy Development and Restoration of the Salton Sea, and was named the Chief Republican Whip.

In July 2017, a web site called American Children First claimed that Mayes had been having an affair with Kristen Olsen, his predecessor as Assembly Republican Leader, who is also the Vice Chair of the California Republican Party and an elected member of the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors. It was revealed that Olsen’s husband had sent a letter to the office of Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon requesting a formal investigation into whether or not the pair has used taxpayer resources and staff time to carry out and/or conceal the extramarital affair.

In January 2018, Mayes formed a group called “New Way California”, with the purpose of advocating for a more moderate Republican Party. The group has been publicly supported by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and both Mayes and Schwarzenegger – along with Ohio governor John Kasich – headlined the group’s inaugural summit in Los Angeles on March 21. The summit featured several other Republicans from the State Assembly, including Rocky Chávez, Devon Mathis, and Jordan Cunningham. The summit was criticized by some in the California Republican Party, including former chairman Ron Nehring, who described them as “elites talking down to grassroots voters.”

In the year 2011 Mayes was forced to resign as a town council member to concentrate on his duties being Chief of Staff of San Bernardino County Supervisor Janice Rutherford and said he was finding that it was “difficult to keep up with the basics of serving as a council member,” and also that “Yucca Valley deserves a council member who will give them 100 percent every day.”
