Selected from manuscripts submitted for individual critique at the SCBWI Annual Conference in Los Angeles, the award is given to the manuscript deemed most promising for publication. Another in the list of “firsts,” Bauer’s winning entry was critiqued by Walter Dean Myers, the first- ever Michael L. Printz Award winner, a prize which recognizes excellence in young adult literature.

Born on a South Carolina military base, she spent the majority of her childhood in New Jersey. During her brief, early marriage, she lived in New York City; she later relocated to Los Angeles, California, where she married (and later divorced) TV director James Quinn.
