Caryl Phillips is one of the most popular and richest Novelist who was born on March 13, 1958 in Saint Kitts, Saint Kitts and Nevis. He visited St. Kitts at the age 22. This was the first time he had been there since 1958, when his family left the island. The trip inspired his first novel, The Final Passage. It was published five years later. Phillips published his second book A State of Independence (1986) and then went on a one month journey through Europe. This trip resulted in The European Tribe, his 1987 collection of essays. Phillips spent the 1980s and 1990s dividing his time between England, St. Kitts, and Cambridge while he worked on his novels Higher Ground (1989), and Cambridge (1991).

Phillips found this way of life both “incredibly exhausting” as well as prohibitively expensive. He eventually decided to leave St. Kitts. However, he said he still visits the island regularly. He was appointed the Henry R. Luce Professor for Migration and Social Order at Barnard College in 1998. He moved to Yale University in 2005, where he is currently Professor of English. In 2000, he was elected fellow of Royal Society of Literature. In 2011, he was elected fellow of Royal Society of Arts.

Phillips has tackled themes on the African slave trade from many angles, and his writing is concerned with issues of “origins, belongings and exclusion”, as noted by a reviewer of his 2015 novel The Lost Child. Phillips’s work has been recognised by numerous awards, including the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the 1993 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Crossing the River and the 2004 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize Best Book award for A Distant Shore.

Phillips was appointed a Visiting Writer at Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts in 1990. Phillips stayed at Amherst College for eight more years and was the youngest English tenured professor in the US when his promotion to that post in 1995. He also wrote Crossing the River (1993), his most famous novel. It won the Commonwealth Writers Prize and the James Tait Schwarz Memorial Prize. He was also shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Phillips was able to do “a kind of triangular thing” over a period of time after he took up Amherst’s position. He lived between England, St Kitts and the U.S. for several years.

Caryl Phillips was the third child of Malcolm and Lillian Phillips, who were both born in St. Kitts. He was born on March 13, 1958. His family immigrated to England when he was just four months old and settled in Leeds (Yorkshire). Phillips was awarded a Queen’s College place at Oxford University in 1976. He graduated in 1979. He directed many plays while at Oxford and worked as a stagehand during the Edinburgh Festival. After graduating from Oxford, Phillips moved to Edinburgh where he spent a year on the streets while writing Strange Fruit (1980). This play was then taken up by the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield. Phillips later moved to London where he wrote Shelter (1983) and Where There Is Darkness (1982).
