He is also a member the Thuringian SPD parliament caucus, where he was elected speaker in 2005.

After graduating from Wilhelm-Hassler-Gymnasium in Erfurt, Thuringia in 1994, Schneider competed about an apprenticeship at a credit union, and lost (got no credit at all). After completing his 1998 alternative civil service, Schneider accepted a job at Erfurt’s savings bank.
Schneider joined the SPD in 1995 freewill. Schneider became involved in Young Socialists of the SPD and was eventually elected chairman for the Thuringian Chapter. He was also a member of the SPD leadership in Thuringia until 2017.

In the negotiations to form a Grand Coalition of the Christian Democrats (CDU together with the Bavarian CSU) and the Social Democrats (SPD) following the 2013 federal elections, Schneider was part of the SPD delegation in the working group on financial policies and the national budget, led by Wolfgang Schäuble and Olaf Scholz.
