Caroline Herring is an American country and folk singer, songwriter, and musician. Herring was born in Canton, Mississippi. She now lives in Decatur with her husband, and their two children. As a graduate student at the University of Mississippi’s Center for the Study of Southern Culture, Herring began singing professionally. She co-founded Thacker mountain Radio while at the University of Mississippi. This was a literary and music hour broadcast from Square Books, Oxford, Mississippi. It is still syndicated by Mississippi Public Radio. Her solo career began in 1999 when Herring moved to Austin, Texas. Six commercial albums have been released by Herring, including her 2001 debut, Twilight. This album earned her the 2001-2002 SXSW Austin Music Award Best New Artist award. Texas Music magazine included Twilight on its Top 50 Essential Texas Albums List in 2012. The song “Mistress” from her 2003 album Wellspring was listed by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as one of the Top 100 Songs About the South. Texas Music magazine listed “Mistress”, one of her classic Texas songs, in its 2012 list of the Top 50 Classic Texas Songs.

It was based on Virginia Lee Burton’s 1941 Caldecott-winning novel The Little House. Herring was awarded the 2012 Coleen Salley Storytelling award at the Fay Kaigler Children’s Book Festival at The University of Southern Mississippi for this album.
