She is best known for her weekly comic strip Story Minute, which evolved into the strip Way Lay. It ran for nearly 20 years in US newspapers like the LA Weekly, NY Press and Salon. Lay has been professionally drawing for more than 30 years. Lay is based in Los Angeles and his strips and illustrations have been published in Entertainment Weekly and Mad, Newsweek as well as Worth Magazine and The New York Times.
Lay published Murderville #1: A Farewell To Armories in 2013. It was self- published and printed in a small number of copies. The comic was funded by Kickstarter.
On January 26, 2015, Carol Lay’s Lay Lines page began on GoComics with a week- long serialization of her story “The Thing Under the Futon” (January 26–30, 2015), followed by serializations of “Now, Endsville” (February 3–10, 2015) and “Invisible City” (April 12–June 26, 2015). Lay Lines has also reprinted pages from Lay’s weekly newspaper comic Story Minutes, in color for the first time. New Lay Lines comics feature followups to Murderville.
Lay drew Simpsons stories from 2010 to 2013 for Bongo Comics.
