Carol-Eduard Novak is one of the most popular and richest Sport Cyclist who was born on July 28, 1976 in Miercurea Ciuc, Romania. Carol-Eduard Novak (Hungarian Novak Karoly Eduard; Hungarian pronunciation [‘nova’k ‘ka’roj] ; born 28.07.76) is a Romanian road- and track racing cyclist who rides for UCI Continental Team Novak.
Novak was also the flagbearer for Romania in 2008’s Paralympic victory. He won a silver medal at the Beijing Games’ road race, making him the first Paralympic medalist. Novak also finished in the 4th place. Traian Basescu, the President of Romania, awarded Novak the Order of Sports Merit for his achievements.
Four years later he traveled to the 2012 Summer Paralympics as Romania’s main medal hope and was given the flagbearer duty once again. Novak competed in four events in London. Starting off in the London Velopark on 31 August, he placed seventh in the 1 km individual time trial. The next day Novak raced in the 4 km individual pursuit and made it to the final with a new world record time of 4:40.315. Novak met Jiří Ježek in the decisive heat, where although he had a slower time than in the qualification run (4:42.00), he beat his Czech opponent by more than three seconds (4:45.232) thus winning the first ever Paralympic gold medal for Romania.
Novak, alumnus of Bucharest’s Faculty of Law, worked as an attorney for many years and continued his training after hours. In 2001, Novak became a professional and won the Paracyclist European Championship in 2003. He reached the 2004 Summer Paralympics where he was fourth in both his races. He formed a team with fellow cyclists in the same year. Later, with the support of Apemin Tusnad SA, the Tusnad Cycling Team became Romania’s top cycling team. He was also co-founder of Tour of Szeklerland with Robert Raduly (Mayor of Miercurea Ciuc). The first edition of Tour of Szeklerland took place in 2008.

Novak, a Romanian Hungarian minorit, was born in Miercurea Ziuc. Novak was born in Miercurea Ciuc, one of the coldest areas in Romania and the centre for winter sports. He started speed skating at the age of six, and won several national titles. Novak, still a junior, won the Romanian National Championship in 1996. While on his way to Italy for an international event, he was involved in a car accident that left his right leg below the ankle. Due to postoperative infections, the first operation in Ludus was unsuccessful. He was eventually transferred to Budapest, Hungary where he was again treated. Novak started cycling at the amateur level two years later after he had recovered from his injury.
Novak was originally a speed skater. However, he lost one of his feet in an accident with a car in 1996. He switched to cycling, becoming a professional cyclist. After his 2004 Paralympics participation, he took part in two more 2008 and 2012 Paralympics. Novak was awarded the silver medal in the individual trial at the 2008 Paralympic Games, making it Romania’s first Paralympic medal. He also won the gold medal in 1-kilometre (0.62-mile) track pursuit at the 2012 Games, a milestone in his Paralympic career. This was the first time Novak had ever achieved this feat and set a new global record. He also won a silver medal for the road time trial.
Novak does not only to compete with other disabled riders but also races against professional able-bodied cyclists. In 2012 he won the Romanian National Road Race Championship, held two months prior to the Paralympics. Novak also participated in other national events. In the 24 km individual time trial he came second behind Ježek, his main opponent already during the track races. In the 80 km road race Novak finished eighth, being 16 seconds behind gold medalist Yegor Dementyev and 3 seconds away from a podium place.
