She also spent time with the undercover drug team. After marrying her husband, she moved to Australia in 1994. Cooke was diagnosed in 1998 with multiple sclerosis, shortly before her 37th birthday. She is an advocate for people with multiple sclerosis. She is an ambassador for multiple sclerosis. In her role she co-founded the 24 Hour Mega Swim, a relay swimming competition that raises funds for those with multiple sclerosis. She lives in Northcote, a suburb of Melbourne, and is a motivational speaker as well as an event planner.

The Victorian Institute of Sport named Cooke the Victorian Masters’ Athlete of the year 2006. She was included in the Who’s Who of Australian Women, Victorians and Australian Women lists in 2008 and 2010. In 2006, she was awarded the Pride of Australia Medal in the “role-model” category. Competing at the 2013 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Baie- Comeau, Canada, she won two gold medals in the Women’s Individual Time Trial T2 and Women’s Road Race T2. Cooke successfully defended the titles at the 2014 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Greenville, South Carolina.

In 2015, at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Nottwil, Switzerland, she won a gold medal in the Women’s Time Trial T2 and a silver medal in the Women’s Road Race T2.

In December 2005, she attended a talent hunt day at the Victorian Institute of Sport. It was there that it was suggested that she start rowing. She began training in June 2006. The 2008 Beijing Paralympics was missed by her coxed four team due to a 0.8 second delay in qualifying for the World Cup tournament in Munich. She was also sixth at the 2009 World Rowing Championships.

Carol Lynn Cooke, AM, a Canadian-born Australian swimmer, cyclist and rower, was born 6 August 1961. She was a keen swimmer and was part of Canada’s national swimming team. However, her country pulled out of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. After moving to Australia in 1994 and being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, she began rowing in 2006. She narrowly missed the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. After moving to Australia, she switched to cycling and won a gold medal in the London Paralympics 2012 and two gold medals in the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics 2016.

Cooke, a keen swimmer, was hoping to be a part of the Canadian team at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. However, Canada boycotted the games and Cooke did not participate. After that, Cooke began triathlon and came fifth at her first competition, 1985 World Police and Fire Games. She won five medals, four gold and one silver in masters’ swimming tournaments. At 44 years old, she was eligible for the Telstra Commonwealth Games Swimming Trials. She reached the finals in the 50 m breaststroke multidisability event.

She then took up cycling, buying a tricycle “on a whim”, and won both the trial and road racing events at the 2011 Australian Para-Cycling Road Championships. She won gold medals in both the road race and road trial competitions at the 2011 Para-cycling Road World Cup in Australia, silver medals in the same events at that year’s UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Denmark, and a gold medal at the 2012 London Paralympics in the Mixed Time Trial T1–2 event. Classified as a T2 cyclist, she is coached by Rebecca McConnell, receives a scholarship from the Victorian Institute of Sport, and is a member of St. Kilda CC.
