Carmen Elmakiyes is one of the most popular and richest Filmmaker who was born on February 17, 1979 in Ashkelon, Southern District, Israel. Elmakiyes also works to document past misdeeds against the Mizrahi community. This includes the kidnapping and sale of Mizrahi children and babies in Israel in the 1950s. Also, Elmakiyes was involved in what is now known as the “The Ringworm Affair”, where up to 200,000 children from Mizrahi backgrounds were “treated” using lethal radiation to eradicate ringworm. This led to widespread cancer and death. Both cases have sealed archives or been lost. Official resistance is there to the release of information.

Elmakiyes, an activist from Mizrahi communities, was one of the founding members of the “Not Nice” movement in 2011. This group aimed to bring Mizrahi issues onto the public agenda. The group’s goals include reducing class social and class gaps and improving public housing, dealing with Israel’s housing shortage, and eliminating poverty. Elmakiyes and the other members of the group are often visible at demonstrations, guerrilla action (such changing street names to Mizrahi ones), and other forms protest. The movement’s name is a reaffirmation of Golda Meir’s famous quote about the Black Panther Mizrahi Social Justice Movement of the 1970s. She dismissed them as “not nice”.

She is also at the forefront of the “Free Avera” movement to release and return Avera Mengistu from Hamas captivity. According to Elmakiyes and other political activists, the government and media have barely addressed the issue of Mengistu’s capture, alleging that it is because he is black, of Ethiopian heritage; this, as opposed to the similar case of Gilad Shalit, for whom the entire country – the public, the government, and the media – literally went to war.

In 2013, Elmakiyes was arrested together with social activist Sapir Slutsker- Amran at a demonstration against cutting child allowances and other austerity measures that impacted the poorer classes. The protest was mounted in front of then Minister of Finance, Yair Lapid’s house. In the course of the violent arrest, Elmakiyes was wounded. She filed a complaint against the policeman who kicked her, citing sexual harassment and battery. Shortly after her release from jail, she initiated a special session in the Knesset of the Internal Affairs and Environment Committee, in which several women members of the Knesset (MKs) participated, and in which she called for feminist activists from all ends of the political spectrum to give testimony about police violence towards female protesters. Elmakiyes then led several demonstrations against police brutality.

Elmakiyes, then 17, moved to Tel Aviv to live with her older sibling. She began work in a shop close to Dizengoff Center. Elmakiyes was thrown several meters back as a result of a bomb going off while she was waiting at the ATM. It was the suicide bombing at Dizengoff Center, a suicide terrorist attack that left over 120 people dead and 14 others injured. Elmakiyes suffered minor injuries but was traumatized by the events and what she saw. It took her several years to recover and she was also released from military service. She said, “It was a difficult time, which took my far from the normal path. Although I was not severely injured, it was a horrifying sight to see children explode in front of your eyes. These are memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Only after she had completed rehabilitation was she able to continue her education. Elmakiyes also earned a degree in filmmaking. She also took several courses in the arts, including a course to become a medical clown.
