He served as the 19th Lieutenant Governor for Florida from 2014 to 2019. He is a member of the Republican Party and was elected as property appraiser for Miami-Dade County in August 2012. He also represented the 113th District in the Florida House of Representatives starting November 2, 2004. In that district, he was the Majority Leader during his final two years. Governor Rick Scott announced Lopez-Cantera’s nomination to fill the term of Jennifer Carroll on January 14, 2014. Carroll resigned on March 12, 2013.

Lopez-Cantera was twice reelected by his fellow Miami-Dade County residents to serve as the chairman of the Miami-Dade Legislative Delegation between 2011 and 2012. He was elected the second property appraiser in Miami-Dade County, which has a population of over 2.5 million and nearly 1,000,000 properties. Lopez-Cantera declared his candidacy for the 2016 United States Senate election to replace retiring Senator Marco Rubio. Lopez-Cantera pulled out of the race after Rubio announced that he would seek reelection in the Senate. This was in direct violation of his original pledge not to run.
