Carlos Garaicoa is one of the most popular and richest Photographer who was born on January 23, 1967 in Havana, Cuba. Carlos Garaicoa was born in Havana (Habana Vieja), in 1967. He saw the impact of socialism as a child and how it affected his neighborhood’s growth. Many buildings in Cuba were abandoned during the Cold War, as well as after the fall European socialism. Modernization was slow and left architecture in ruin. Although he was passionate about architecture and art as a teenager, he was also trained at the Vibora technical school in engineering and thermodynamics. Following these studies Garaicoa completed four years of compulsory service in Cuba as a draughtsman and then enrolled in the painting section at El Instituto Superior de Arte from 1989-1992. Because of the openness of the ISA’s instruction, Garaicoa became interested in architecture and art. Garaicoa was also interested in breaking down strict definitions of art, literature, and media and instead using all three in his work. Garaicoa, however, was drafted into the army again during his time at art school but refused to reenlist. Garaicoa was not allowed to present his thesis and therefore never received his degree from the ISA. Garaicoa has been offered an honorary degree but refuses to accept.

These happenings were continued by Garaicoa, who began to use photography in urban spaces. Garaicoa’s piece 39 (1991) featured a wooden paddle with the number 39 on it. He also hung a photograph of the paddle and gave a list of possible explanations. This made spectators question the significance and importance of Garaicoa’s message. Garaicoa created a similar piece in Homage to the Six (1992), with the number six written on a blank column and taking photos of passersby. Later, he made prints of the photos taken at the installation site. The word “six”, written in Spanish, was placed at the bottom of each image. As many people passed the installation unaware, his documentation was intended to criticize society’s tendency to ignore messages.

Another piece in the exhibit, Ciudad doblada (roja) (Bend City (Red)) (2010), was an intricate sculpture made of 96 small, folded pieces of paper. Bridges, pyramids, buildings and arches pop up out of each red city-block. The sculpture forces the viewer to examine the difference between the individual structures and then the congregate of all of them, a model of how socialism is an overarching structure composed of individuals

Minimo is not Minimal (Los trucos de Mr. S. L.) (Minimo is not Minimal (Mr. S.L.’s tricks)) I, III, and IV (2010) are central to the exhibit. The pieces continue to draw upon themes explored by Garaicoa in the past. In Minimo is not Minimal, Garaicoa juxtaposes an idealized minimal structure with the broken I-beam found in Havana. The use of images from Havana, Beijing, and Shanghai show that Garaicoa believes there is a connection between modern sculptures and modern socialist states. Garaicoa highlights the erosion of political idealism through the ruin of modernist architecture.

Carlos Garaicoa started his career in 1990s Cuba, when the USSR and Cuba embargo combined to push Cuba into economic depression. However, this was a tough time for artists. Garaicoa managed to gain international recognition through his social commentary and political discourses in his art. Carlos Garaicoa didn’t focus on any one medium in his earliest works. He believed it was too restrictive and he was interested in the intersections between theory, reality and art. Garaicoa’s initial pieces were anonymous installations that were placed on the streets or made changes to public spaces like buildings and walls. This was done in an effort to break down these barriers. Garaicoa was inspired by international art circles from the 1950s and 60s. These installations were called “happenings” because they depended on public participation.

Born 1967, Carlos Garaicoa is a Cuban contemporary artist who specializes in photography and installation. After a mass exodus of Cuban artists, Garaicoa was made a prominent Cuban artist during the nineteen nineties. Many of his pieces include social and political commentary about Havana. Garaicoa’s work draws on postmodernist theory to link aesthetics and meaning in urban spaces and architecture.

Suceso en Aguiar 600 (Happenings in Aguiar 609) (1990) was his first piece. He sent letters to residents in Garaicoa’s Havana apartment building with an ambiguous message about how the building and residents would be changed. The signs were posted with information about his installation. He added nylon strips to each floor, took photos of the reactions of his neighbors, and asked for their opinions. He received a wide range of opinions, some describing it as art and others as arbitrary and pointless. He kept his identity secret throughout the process and did not reveal his plans for the project.

In 2005, Garaicoa produced a series of large scale black and white photographs of stores and restaurants that capture the nature of Havana’s consumerist past and present. The shops in the images are juxtaposed against the lives of the less fortunate. These photographs have become a staple of Garaicoa’s work, representing his artistic style and political critique of poverty and capitalism in Cuba.
