Carlos Checa, a Spanish ex-professional motorcycle racer who was born 15 October 1972, is the 2011 Superbike World Championship winner. After more than a decade of racing in MotoGP and 500cc, he switched to Superbike World Championship riding a Honda. He is the winner of two Grand Prix. David Checa is his younger brother and a motorbike racer. He competed in Superbike World Championship 2008.
Checa quit MotoGP in 2008 to become a member of the Ten Kate Honda Superbike World Championship team as a replacement for 2007 champ James Toseland. He challenged Max Neukirchner to win the last corner at Valencia, which resulted in Neukirchner being thrown out of the race. After four podium finishes, Checa won his first two victories at Valencia. Both were achieved in the meeting at Miller Motorsports Park Salt Lake City on June 1, 2008. Although he did not make the podium, he was able to place fifth in the championship due to consistent performance elsewhere. Ryuichi Kiyonari, his teammate, won the Suzuka 8 Hours.
In 2009, Checa struggled to compete for much of the season, securing just four podium finishes and finishing seventh in the riders’ standings, 32 points behind satellite Honda rider Leon Haslam. During the 2009 season, Ten Kate Honda announced that they would be downsizing their operation from three riders to just two. Both Checa and Ryuichi Kiyonari were released, with Jonathan Rea retained and Max Neukirchner joining the team from Suzuki.
Checa returned to the series in 2010, as replacement for Mika Kallio for the last two races of the season.
Checa raced with the factory Yamaha team in 2003 and 2004, before moving to Marlboro Ducati for 2005. He returned to Tech 3 Yamaha in 2006, and proved to be much more stable than previous years. He comfortably beat James Ellison but was not a threat to the rest, since they were using Dunlop tyres. In 2007, he was the only LCR Honda rider. The 800cc Honda proved uncompetitive for many riders. Checa received an updated frame at the Sachsenring. This was a result of Checa riding the same Michelin tyres that the works team and the other Hondas using Bridgestones.
