The Padres promoted Asuaje to the major leagues on September 21, 2016, once the Triple-A team ended their playoff run. He made six starts at second base for the Padres as they finished out the season.

Asuaje is a native of Venezuela. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas high school and played college baseball at Nova Southeastern University, Broward County, Florida. Asuaje was named Sunshine State Conference Freshman and Sunshine State Conference Coplayer of the Year in 2011, 2012, and 2013. His slash line of.356/.451/.519 was in his three seasons at Nova.
