Carlo Strenger is one of the most popular and richest Psychologist who was born on July 16, 1958 in Basel, Switzerland. Carlo Strenger (Hebrew krlv SHtrngr ; July 16, 1958 – October 25, 2019, Tel Aviv University) was a Swiss and Israeli psychologist and philosopher. He also served as a professor of philosophy at Tel Aviv University’s Cohn Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Ideas and School of Psychological Sciences.

He was a private practitioner in Tel Aviv during the 1990s, and he also taught adjunct at Tel Aviv University. His clinical work combined psychoanalytic and existentialist themes. He presented his existential psychoanalytic perspective on Individuality, the Impossible Project (1998).

In his The Designed Self (2004) he argued that Generation X’s experience of life was very different from that of earlier generation. No longer suffering from suffocating taboos, GenXers were faced with a fluid world and great pressure to succeed.

From 2007, Strenger was a columnist for Israel’s leading liberal newspaper Haaretz, and for Neue Zürcher Zeitung, and wrote occasionally in Britain’s The Guardian,The New York Times and Foreign Policy and blogged on the Huffington Post.

Strenger was active in Israeli politics and culture since the late 1990s, when he represented Israel’s left on a weekly radio talk-show. In 2003 elections, he was part of the Labor party’s strategy team. In 2004, he joined the World Federation of Scientists’ Permanent Monitoring Panel on Terrorism. He also wrote academic analyses of the Middle East conflict from the perspective of Existential psychology.

From 1986 to 2000 Strenger’s research focus was on psychoanalysis. This theme is one he returned to in later works. His first Book Between Hermeneutics and Science claimed that psychoanalysis lacked sufficient evidence due to its almost sole reliance on clinical data. He argued that psychoanalysis must interact with mainstream science in order to not become irrelevant. Freud’s Legacy in the Global Era (2016) further develops this position. He also considers recent developments in cognitive neurosciences. Carlo Strenger was the son of a Swiss father and a Belgian mother. He was born in Basel. His Orthodox Jewish family raised him as a religious Jew. He became an atheist as a teenager after he lost faith in his religion. His life- defining moment was his conversion from Orthodox Judaism into secular atheism. After high school, he was already an atheist and spent one year in a yeshiva before he began his philosophy and psychology studies in Zurich, Switzerland. He moved to Israel at age 29 and studied philosophy and clinical psychological at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1989, he earned his Ph.D. and taught modern thought at The Department of Philosophy. After graduating from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he moved to Tel Aviv with Julia EladStrenger, a psychologist and political philosopher.

From 2000 onward, Strenger researched the impact of globalization on personal identity and meaning. He wrote a number of papers and two books on the topic, The Designed Self and The Fear of Insignificance. He spoke regularly about globalisation and world-citizenship, among other issues, including at TEDX Jaffa 2012.

Strenger was a proponent of the two-state solution, i.e. he claims that the only way to end the Middle Eastern Conflict is establishing a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital alongside Israel. His criticisms of Israel’s settlement policies were often quite pronounced, and he saw Israel’s failure to engage with the Arab League Peace Initiative as an indication of political and strategic short-sightedness.
