His parents were American missionaries to Brazil in the 1970s. Prater’s father was a Connecticut pulpit minister, which led to Prater and his family moving to the United States. Prater was an enrolled student in Tang Soon Do in 1987 after he moved to the U.S. He continued training there for three more years. Prater, his father and mother divorced in 1993. He moved to Oklahoma with his father in 1993 to begin competing in wrestling. Prater started training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, judo and wrestling after he saw the first UFC events. Prater excelled and was then recruited by Jeff Lindsey, an MMA fighter and grappler. He returned to Brazil in 1998. Prater began training in Luta livre, boxing, and kickboxing while still in high school. Prater traveled to Thailand in 2000 to compete in Muay Thai. He then moved to Texas to continue his training with Yves Edwards.
Prater faced Carlos Condit again at WEC 32 in early 2008. Condit was then the WEC welterweight champion. Condit won the rematch by submission in round one.
Prater lost to Marcus LeVesseur on October 5, 2012, at UFC on FX 5 via split decision. After this loss, he was subsequently released from the promotion.
Prater faced Canadian TJ Grant on May 15, 2012, at UFC on Fuel TV: Korean Zombie vs. Poirier. Grant defeated Prater via unanimous decision.
Prater made his professional debut on November 2, 2002. He went on to record a 10-0 record over the next year. Drew Fickett was his first professional loss. Prater’s first win was when he defeated future WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit via triangle choke.
