Carldell stated that he had been working hard all his life to achieve the goals he set for himself. My father was diagnosed with cancer and my childhood was spent in tough New Orleans neighborhoods where boys would find it easy to steal cars or go looking for fights. But Coach Tillman would always pick up my ball and take me to practice, no matter what season it was. For his senior year, he attended John F. Kennedy High School. He played basketball at Abramson under the guidance of Robert Tillman, his head coach. Johnson was also coached by Tillman in AAU basketball. He was not recruited to play basketball at any of the division one schools after high school. Instead, he attended Salt Lake Community College where he was the starting point guard. In his one-season at Salt Lake Community College, he averaged eight points per game and eight assists. Tillman met Mike Anderson, then head basketball coach at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, and asked him to “just watch [Johnson] for a bit; get all of your players together, and play a pick-up game and let him protect your point guard.” Tillman said that they eventually went out and played. After the game, Mike told Tillman that he was going give him another chance, but that he would have him sit out his first season.
His mother Elise, who was living in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina 2006, lost her home but managed to flee to Houston, Texas before moving to Carldell, Birmingham, Alabama. She currently resides in Houston.

Johnson was undrafted in 2006 NBA draft. However, he was selected by the Vancouver Dragons in the sixth round 2006 Continental Basketball Association draft. Johnson never played for the team. For the 2006-07 season, he signed with Verviers-Pepinster in Belgium. He averaged 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game in 32 games.
