Carla Rippey was conceived in Kansas City, Kansas on May 21, 1950. She is the daughter James Rippey, and Barbara Wright. Her father was a photojournalist and her mother was an English Literature scholar and Ph.D. holder. Rippey was born in the American Midwest, in the states of Kansas and Iowa. Rippey has two siblings and a brother. She moved to Washington, D.C. after graduating high school.

Rippey’s first solo show was Serigrafias aguafuertes and monotipos in 1976 at the Benjamin Franklin Library. Her work was featured as the cover image of Roberto Bolano’s first book in 1976. She began a long correspondence.

Rippey began exhibiting in group shows in the 70’s. Her 1985 solo shows included “Cheap Philosophy and Trips to the Pyramids” Carrillo Gil Museum, Mexico City, “. During the 1990s, Rippey’s work was exhibited many times. Her work was primarily shown in exhibitions around Mexico and the U.S. Most of her exhibitions consisted of prints and drawings, including one-person shows in the National Printing Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, and the Museum of Monterrey.

In 2013, Rippey was appointed as the first female director of the historic National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking, La Esmerelda, a government dependent school in Mexico City. She works with the school to help encourage and promote a “collaborative model of education”.

Rippey considered herself a poet throughout her childhood. However, after she moved to Chile in 1972, Rippey was forced to abandon writing and go back to drawing. She was a visiting student at both the Universidad de Chile (Universidad Catolica de Chile) in 1972. There she learned printmaking and audited classes. Pascoe and Rippey were part of the leftist political group “Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria”, which again produced silk-screened posters. After receiving an order to disperse, Rippey and Pascoe, her husband, met MIR militants on September 11, 1973. The couple were sheltered in their home by Julio Rhea, the Bolivian exile, and Humberto Rhea Clavijo (Che Guevara’s brother). The couple were forced to leave and moved to Mexico City, Pascoe’s family home at Mixcoac.

Rippey was a student from Old Westbury who met Ricardo Pascoe and they married Santiago de Chile in 1972 during the presidency by Salvador Allende. Pascoe and Rippey became parents to Luciano Pascoe Rippey, in 1974, and Andres Pascoe Rippey, in 1976. Pascoe and Rippey separated in 1979. Rippey moved to Jalapa in Veracruz in 1980 to become a teacher of printmaking at Veracruz State University. Rippey began a long-lasting relationship with Adolfo Patino (Mexican photographer and artist), in 1979. They were the organizers of the “Peyote” collective.

As a child she was a prolific artist, but poetry became her main form of creative expression as an adult. She visited the Joslyn Art Museum, which was right next to her high school. Joslyn was where she first encountered prints. Rippey worked in the evenings and saved her money, which enabled her to travel to Paris at age 18. She attended La Sorbonne, Paris. Rippey attended college at State University of New York, Old Westbury from 1969 to 1972. It offered an experimental program which allowed Rippey to design her own study plan. Her senior thesis was written by Luis Camnitzer, a Uruguayan critic and artist.

In 1977, Felipe Ehrenberg invited her to join the Groupos de Trabajadores de la Cultura, a collective of leftist cultural organizations. In 1985, Rippey’s first exhibition was displayed at the Carrillo Gil Museum in Mexico City. After meeting Adolfo Patiño, she joined the experimental art group, Peyote y la Compañía. Armando Cristeto, Alberto Pergón, Xavier Quiirarte, Ángel de la Rueda, Alejandro Arango, and Lola Muñoz-Pons were also members. During the 1990s, Rippey’s work was exhibited more often. Her work was primarily shown in exhibitions around Mexico and the U.S. Most of her exhibitions consisted of prints and drawings, including one-person shows in the National Printing Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, and the Museum of Monterrey.
