In January 2017, Olsons’s debut solo album, recorded in Malmo, Sweden, in 1988, was released in the U.S. by Sunset Blvd Records. This U.S. edition is titled Rubies & Diamonds after one of the album’s tracks. It features Olson and George Callins of the Textones, plus Gene Clark on vocals, plus most of the members of the Swedish rock band Wilmer X: Thomas Holst (lead guitar), Stefan Bjork (bass guitar), Sticky Bomb (drums) and Jalle Lorensson (harmonica). The album was produced by Tomas Gabrielsson along with Olson and Callins.

Olson’s work as a producer, band leader and solo performer has been praised by critics. She has collaborated with Mick Taylor (former Rolling Stones guitarist), Percy Sledge, Don Henley and Gene Clark. In the 1980s, her musical partners included Gene Clark (who was a former member of Byrd), and Mick Taylor. The Carla Olson/Mick Taylor band featured George Callins on guitar and Jesse Sublett as bass (Sublett had previously performed with Olson/Valentine in Austin in a group called the Violators), Tom Jr Morgan playing saxophone and Rick Hemmert drumming. On keyboards, they had Barry Goldberg (the Electric Flag and the Rides), Ian McLagan (Small Faces), and Rick Hemmert (the Hot For Snakes). Various combinations of these musicians appear on subsequent Olson studio albums Within An Ace and Reap The Whirlwind.
