Gericke was the daughter of Madalein Gericke and David Gericke, a South African diplomat. She traveled extensively in America, Sweden and Brazil as a child because of her father’s work. She was a young person when her political beliefs developed. She was born in South Africa under the apartheid regime of National Party and strongly opposed authoritarian government policies. From 1989 to 1993 she studied law at the University of Pretoria, graduating with a Baccalaureus Procurationis. She moved to California with her husband after she won a green card through the Diversity Lottery. After passing the California Bar exam, she was employed as an in-house corporate counsel for Fortune 500 companies. She received an M.F.A. in 2008 The City College of New York awarded her an M.F.A. in Creative Writing.

On Friday, 13 May 2016, an entire neighborhood on the west side of Manchester, New Hamphire, where Gericke is a homeowner, was placed under lockdown with a shelter-in-place order when two officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being shot during a manhunt. The lockdown started and continued for more than five hours after the suspect had been apprehended. According to a Union Leader op-ed, the neighborhood “felt like a city under siege.” Several schools were closed for the whole day, and streets were cordoned off until 3pm, with residents unable to access their cars and thus unable to move freely or go to work. Heavily armed law enforcement officials with automatic weapons and police dogs patrolled the streets and searched cars, trash cans, and yards as helicopters circled overhead.

In February 2008, Gericke moved from New York City to New Hampshire for the Free State Project, a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to attract 20,000 liberty activists to the Granite State. She organized the FSP’s Porcupine Freedom Festival (colloquially known as “PorcFest”) twice in 2009 and 2010. She became the president of the FSP in 2011. In this capacity, she has appeared in the media, and was the driving force behind “triggering the move,” which occurred on 3 February 2016, when it was announced at a press conference that 20,000 people had signed the pledge. As president, she was very vocal in the media about promoting the Free State Project, and has appeared in outlets such as CNN, Forbes, The Economist, Wired, GQ, Mother Jones, The Washington Post, Fox News, NBC, and The New York Times.

In 2013, more than 1,500 petitioners disapproving of the BEARCAT acquisition were ignored by Concord. People feared that this would result in increased New Hampshire militarized police tactics. These concerns are now proven to be real. I was born in South Africa during apartheid, a police state. However, it was not common to see entire neighborhoods being subjected to daytime curfews. These things were not what I wanted to escape, so I came to America to avoid them. Freedom should be available to all people, and freedom should not be sacrificed in order to ensure’security. In times of crisis, you shouldn’t give up your civil rights and constitutional rights.

Gericke was with others on 24 March 2010 as they drove in two cars to a friend when they were stopped by New Hampshire police. Gericke was told she wouldn’t be pulled over so she stopped at a nearby school and borrowed a camera to record the encounter. Although the camera was not working properly, she told the officer she was recording and a second officer approached her car and demanded to see it. She was not able to turn it over and was then arrested. In the beginning, she was charged with disobeying an officer and obstruction of a government official. She was arrested for unlawful interception of oral communication, a felony that carries a maximum seven-year sentence. Before going to trial, all charges were dropped. Gericke brought suit against the police and the town. Gericke claimed that the officers’ actions were retaliatory prosecutions in violation of her constitutional rights.
