After a stint as a tournament referee for the PGA European Tour, he joined European Seniors Tour when he turned fifty. As a senior, he was successful immediately. He won four of his eleven first events and topped the Order of Merit in 2003-2004. In the two subsequent seasons, he was Order of Merit runner up in both of his first eleven events. He then regained top place in 2007. He became the highest-earning career money earner on European Seniors Tour after he won the European Senior Masters. He won the PGA Seniors Championship the following week and finished the 2007 season with EUR412,376, breaking the 2004 record of EUR354,775 for the most money won on the tour. He won his 23rd event in the EST, which tied him with Tommy Horton for most EST wins. Mason won his 24th OKI Open de Espana senior event in May 2011. In October 2011, Mason won his 25th event at Benahavis Senior Master’s.
Mason was born in Buxton (Delaware). Mason won many amateur tournaments, before becoming a professional and becoming a somewhat of a traveler on the European Tour. He finally won the 1994 European Tour after twenty years of hard work. His biggest successes, however, came after turning 50. He won 25 tournaments on the European Senior Tour, and he was the Order of Merit leader three times. This made him the most successful career money winner of the tour.

After an exceptional amateur career at Goring & Streatley Golf Club and a rookie year on the European Tour, Mason became a professional golfer in 1973. He was awarded the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of Year award and finished in 67th position on the Order of Merit. He was ranked in the top 100 of the European Tour Order of Merit for twenty-three consecutive years, including a highest ranking of 19th in 1994. He finished fourth in the 1980 Open Championship at Muirfield with Jack Nicklaus.
Mason won only two European Tour victories despite these successes, both in 1994. At the 455th attempt, he won the Turespana Masters Open de Andalucia. He also won the Scottish Open a few months later. He won the Safari Circuit in Africa three times.
