Meade was selected by NASA in June 1985 and made an astronaut in July 1986. Meade has held various technical positions, including verification testing flight software in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory, crew escape flight tests and Orbiter ground Egress tests. He also performed launch support duties at both the Kennedy Space Center as well as the Vandenberg Launch Site. Before STS-38, Meade was an Astronaut Office representative to both the Solid Rocket Booster Program at Marshall Space Flight Center and the Space Shuttle Main Engine Program. He was also a Mission Control spacecraft communicator, CAPCOM (Capcom), and the leader astronaut for Rendezvous and Docking Operations in the two years that followed STS-50.
A veteran of three space flights, Meade has logged over 712 hours in space. He served as a mission specialist on STS-38 in 1990, STS-50 in 1992, and STS-64 in 1994.
STS-50, carrying the first United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML), launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on June 25, 1992. USML is a series of Spacelab flights dedicated to basic scientific research in the fields of fluid physics, combustion science, solid state physics, and biotechnology. This flight was also the first to utilize the Extended Duration Orbiter capabilities of the newly modified Orbiter Columbia. Mission duration was 331 hours, 30 minutes, 4 seconds. After 221 orbits of the Earth, the crew of Columbia landed at the Kennedy Space Center on July 9, 1992, thus ending the longest flight in the history of the Space Shuttle Program.
Before he entered active duty with the United States Air Force in 2007, Meade was a Hughes Fellow in the California Institute of Technology, and an electronics designer at Hughes Aircraft Company, Culver City. He was a distinguished graduate from Undergraduate Pilot Training at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas when he entered the U.S. Air Force. Meade was then assigned to the 363rd tactical reconnaissance Wing at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina. He flew the RF-4C. Meade was then chosen to be a USAF Test Pilot School Class 80B. He was awarded the Liethen-Tittle Award for Outstanding Test Pilot upon graduation and assigned to the 6510th test Wing at Edwards Air Force Base in California. Meade worked on the F-5E, RF-5E, and F-20 aircrafts, as well as the ground-launched or air-launched cruise missiles. Meade also performed high-speed taxi, braking and tailhook as well as landing, taking off, landing, flying qualities, performance, and weapon system tests in F-4E aircraft. Meade was then assigned the F-16 Combined Test Force, where he flew both performance, loads, flutter, flying quality, and weapon system tests in the F-16A as well as the F-16C aircraft. He was then reassigned to USAF Test Pilot School in 1985 as a test pilot instructor for the F-4, A-7 Corsair II and A-37. He also taught performance, stability/control and departure/spins and other radar flight testing techniques. He was also the departure/spin instructor and the avionics system test aircraft program manager.

In 1968, he graduated from Randolph High School on Randolph Air Force Base in Texas. He received a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Electronics Engineering in 1973 from The University of Texas. In 1975, he completed a Master of Science in Electronics Engineering at California Institute of Technology. As an engineer manager for the Crew Exploration Vehicle project, he is currently employed by Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems.
STS-38 launched at night from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on November 15, 1990. Meade conducted Department of Defense operations during this five- day flight which concluded after 80 orbits of the Earth in 117 hours, 54 minutes, 28 seconds. In the first Shuttle recovery in Florida since 1985, Space Shuttle Atlantis and her five-man crew landed back at the Kennedy Space Center on November 20, 1990.
