Callan Ward is one of the most popular and richest Australian Rules Footballer who was born on April 10, 1990 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Ward is the great-grandson of South Melbourne’s former captain Bill Gunn. He played 104 games between 1952 and 1959 for the club. Five player managers ran for Ward’s support as he approached the 2007 AFL Draft. He chose Paul Connors to represent him just one week before the draft. Ward, who was only 20 days old when he could nominate for the draft, was the Bulldogs’ second selection (number 19, overall).
Ward had a strong season in 2013, even though the club won only one game. Ward was awarded best-on ground for his 31 disposals as well as four goals against Melbourne. Ward continued his consistent season with another Brownlow Medal vote-getter in 2014. These four performances included four best on ground performances. Two of these were narrow seven point losses to St Kilda or Hawthorn.
In 2018, Ward played his 200th game in round 8 against West Coast, and played his 150th game for the Giants (becoming the first player to do so) in round 19 against St Kilda. Ward sustained a knee injury during the 2019 pre-season, meaning that he would miss the first few rounds of the season and his consecutive games streak would end at 95 games. He returned against Geelong in round 4; however, five minutes into the game, he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury, ruling him out for the rest of the season. He later began assisting Giants coach Leon Cameron on the interchange bench during matches while recovering from his injury. In December 2019, Stephen Coniglio took over the captaincy of the Giants from Ward and Davis.
Ward signed with the Greater Western Sydney Giants on 5 September 2011. He was the second player to publicly declare his support for the new club. Ward, Phil Davis, and Luke Power were also announced as co-captains of the club’s inaugural team. Ward kicked the Giants first ever goal on 24 March 2012 in their debut AFL match against Sydney. Ward won the Giants’ first best-and fairest award, the Kevin Sheedy Medal, after his coach Kevin Sheedy.
