Venkiteswaran Subramanian, a Chalakudi, Kerala-based Indian film critic, professor and documentary film maker, was born 23 May 1956. He writes primarily in English and Malayalam. He is the Artistic director of the Signs Film Festival for Short Films and Documentaries. He was the 60th National Film Awards’ jury member for best cinematography. As a protest against the decision of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy to invite Mohanlal (a superstar) as chief guest, he resigned as an officer from the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy.
He also published K R Mohanan Samanthara Yathrakal: K R Mohanante Cinema. Lalit Mohan Joshi co-edited A Door to Adoor, a book about filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan. DC Books published three books containing Venkiteswaran’s collection of articles, which take a critical view at key trends and milestones within Malayalam cinema. Malayala Cinema Padanangal was awarded a Special Jury Mention at the 2011 State film awards. Interviews with film personalities include Adoor Gopalakrishnan and T.V. Chandran and Werner Herzog.
