C. L. Max Nikias is one of the most popular and richest Engineer who was born on September 30, 1952 in Komi Kebir, Famagusta District, Cyprus. Chrysostomos Lizos “Max”, a Cypriot-American academic and former president of the University of Southern California, was born September 30, 1952. He is the president emeritus and holds the Malcolm R. Currie chair in Technology and the Humanities. Since 1991, he was at USC as a professor and director of national research centres, president, dean, provost, or vice- president. As chair of College Football Playoff’s Board of Managers (2015-2018), as well as as chair of Keck Medical Center’s board (2009-2018), member of board of directors of Alfred Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering (2001-2018), member of board of Trustees of Chadwick School (2001-2010). He is currently an assistant professor of electrical engineering and the director for the USC Institute for Technology Enabled Higher Education.

Nikias was the dean of USC Viterbi School of Engineering from 2001 to 2005. This solidified its status as an engineering school of distinction. He was responsible for the development of the school’s biomedical engineering venture and the creation of its largest distance-learning program. He was responsible for the creation of the school’s Tutor Hall of Engineering. He established important partnerships with corporations such as Pratt & Whitney and Airbus, Boeing and Chevron. A fundraising campaign that raised more than $250m was also led by Andrew and Erna Viterbi, who gave a $52million gift to the school. Nikias played a key role in supporting the Information Sciences Institute at the USC Viterbi School and working with faculty to create two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers (ERC) as well as the first Research Center of Excellence for the Department of Homeland Security at USC.

In 2011, Nikias announced a $6 billion fundraising campaign, which—at the time of its launch—was the largest in the history of higher education. In six and a half years, USC’s campaign surpassed the $6 billion mark—18 months ahead of schedule—bringing to the university, on the average, $900 million per year. The fundraising campaign raised a total of $7 billion in eight years. The Chronicle of Higher Education has called Nikias a “prodigious fundraiser.” During Nikias’ tenure, USC consistently ranked among the top five universities, along with Stanford and Harvard, in cash charitable donations.

As president, Nikias wrote frequently about a range of nationally significant topics, including the value of—and access to—higher education; the future of online education; the continued importance of the arts and humanities; the art of leadership through the classics; and the role of elite research universities, particularly as economic drivers.

From 1996 to 2001, Nikias was the founding director of the school’s Integrated Media Systems Center. Nikias led the effort of the engineering school to secure the center during a fierce national competition that was conducted by the National Science Foundation. The competition included 116 other proposals. From 1992 to 2001, Nikias was also the associate dean of engineering school. His research covered signal processing, biomedical engineering, digital communications, military radar and sonar. However his most notable accomplishment is his understanding of multimedia’s central role in the future internet and the IMSC.
