Bruno Heller (born January 13 1960) is a English screenwriter, producer, and director. He is best known for his work on his own HBO TV series Rome as well as the CBS television show The Mentalist. He also produced The TV series Gotham that is which is based on the Batman franchise on behalf of FOX as well as Pennyworth to Epix.

He left England to New York, where he met their wife Miranda Cowley, granddaughter of Malcolm Cowley, the American poetry critic and writer Malcolm Cowley. Following five years of living in New York, Heller moved to Los Angeles and worked on several television dramas, including two with the USA Network: Touching Evil and The Huntress. However, his breakthrough came with Rome that he co-created. After the cancellation of the series due to its expensive costs, Heller created The Mentalist. On September 12, 2012 Heller offered a drama legal called The Advocates to CBS, that was written and directed by him however the project was not made into a the series. In 2014, Heller made an TV series based off Batman’s Batman James Gordon character. James Gordon called Gotham for Fox Broadcasting Company.

In 2018/19 Heller created Pennyworth. This series will focus on the early years of Alfred Pennyworth, friend and butler to Bruce Wayne/Batman. The series is not a Gotham spinoff but a brand new story looking at Alfred’s origins as a former British soldier who sets up a private security firm and goes to work with Thomas Wayne — Batman’s father — in 1960s England. Pennyworth is set in a completely different universe despite hailing from Heller and producers Warner Horizon. Heller will pen the script and executive produce. The drama marks a reunion for Heller with Gotham’s Danny Cannon, who will exec produce and direct the pilot as he did with the Fox Batman origin story.

Since 2008 Heller developed the CBS television show, The Mentalist, with his production company Primrose Hill Productions along and Warner Bros. Television. On January 7, 2009, The Mentalist won an award to be named “Favorite New TV Drama” at the 35th People’s Choice Awards and since then, the show’s star, Simon Baker has received numerous nominations for his performance in Patrick Jane, the main character. Patrick Jane. Heller was the show’s the show’s director from season 1 until six. He left the show prior to season 7 to concentrate on Gotham.
