He won 11 of his 13 fights before he was awarded his first title shot in the world. On May 18 1983 Curry won over Leroy Haley in a twelve-round unanimous victory to take home the WBC Super Lightweight Championship. The younger brother of Curry, Donald was the winner of his own WBA Welterweight Championship several months earlier. The brothers were the very first brothers to win world championships at the same time. A third Curry brothers, Graylin, was also professional boxer.
Curry made two successful title defenses, knocking out Hidekazu Akai in seven rounds and winning a rematch with Haley by a twelve-round split decision. On January 29, 1984, Curry lost the title by a tenth-round knockout to Billy Costello.
Curry was found innocent by reason of insanity and ordered confined to a mental hospital until he was no longer a threat to society. He was released on March 26, 1985, after a team of three psychiatrists said he was no longer mentally ill.
He signed a contract to box Minoru Fugiya from Japan the 24th of January the 24th of January, 1978. Then, he was offered a second fight against Benitez and was scheduled to take place just 11 days later on February 4. He decided to take each fight. He defeated Fugiya in just three rounds, and then returned into America. U.S. for the Benitez fight that Benitez was victorious in a 10-round majority decision. Benitez fought harder for the second fight and Curry was a bit worn out from travel. “I just wanted to get it done and go to bed,” Curry declared. “I should have sent out for coffee.”
