As of 1983 Benedict was batting of well over .300 at the beginning of June. This earned him the position of reserve player in the National League in the 1983 All-Star Game. He finished the season with a career-high batting percentage that was .298 and two hits as well as 43 runs batted into and an .992 fielding rate, which was just behind Gary Carter among National League catchers.

The most memorable moment of Benedict’s season was in a regular-season game in which he broke the MLB record when he threw three base runners in one innings. In the only post- season appearance of his career, the Braves lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1982 National League Championship Series.

Benedict was a student at The University of Nebraska at Omaha and was chosen to the Atlanta Braves in the 5th round of the 1976 Major League Baseball Draft. He made his MLB debut on the 18th of August in 1978, the day of his birthday was on the 23rd of August.
