Bruce Arthur Artwick (born January 1st 1953) is an American software engineer. He was the inventor of the first consumer-grade simulation software for flight. He established subLOGIC following his graduation in 1977 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1977. He then launched its first release of Flight Simulator for the Apple II in the year following. The original Apple II software was purchased by Microsoft in 1982, and was later renamed Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Bruce Artwick established subLOGIC in October 1977. SubLOGIC was founded with Bruce’s business partner, Stu Moment. SubLOGIC’s business model subLOGIC was to market software via mail. The company was able to grow significantly in only two years and Artwick was able to shift a part of his business back to Champaign Urbana. subLOGIC was able to expand and came up with various variations of the Flight Simulator program and other entertainment software. In in 1982 Flight Simulator became a top-selling item for Apple who bought its Flight Simulator product.
Microsoft realized his expertise in the field of flight simulation and asked Artwick to partake in a project that would change the simulator industry. Instead of flight purposes, Microsoft wanted to showcase the machine’s graphics capabilities. By the late 1980s, the subLOGIC business started to decline because the 8-bit market shifted to a 16-bit market so Artwick decided to pursue other things and left subLOGIC.
Shortly after, Microsoft decided to enter the fray to obtain a license for Flight Simulator. Microsoft obtained a joint license and by November 1982, Microsoft’s version of Flight Simulator hit the stores as a PC entertainment program. As years passed, computer graphics continued to improve and Flight Simulator software also changed along with it.
In his thesis from May 1976, titled “A versatile computer generated dynamic light display” He presented a simulation for the flow of an airplane on the computer screen. By doing that, Artwick proved that it was possible to make use of the 6800 microprocessor that was the first microcomputer available capable of handling graphics and calculations required by the specifications required to create the real-time simulation of flight.
