Huntzinger was a student at Pendleton Heights High School situated in Pendleton, Indiana. In his time at Pendleton Heights High School Huntzinger pitched to a winning record of 26-6 and recorded 257 strikeouts during the 201 innings he pitched. Huntzinger committed to Indiana University on a baseball scholarship following his high school. Huntzinger was selected by the Boston Red Sox selected Huntzinger in the third round with the 114th overall pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft. Huntzinger made a deal with Boston and received an additional $225,000 in signing bonuses and thereby avoiding the college.

On May 9, 2016, Huntzinger signed a minor league deal with the Chicago White Sox. He was released on June 18, 2016.
