Brian Mark Kowitz (born August 17th 1969) is an American former professional baseball player who played for the Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers as well as the Toronto Blue Jays from 1990 until 1996.
As a junior in 1990 in the college of Clemson, Kowitz was named ACC Player of the Year. He was a.403 hitter .403 in his career. He was also among the top scorers on the field in NCAA Division I in runs (87 2nd, 1st within the ACC) and was tied with 7th place in hits (102 first in the ACC). Kowitz was able to steal 34 bases (first in ACC) in the course of 66 games, and contributed to the running of 60 runners. In the year 1990, Kowitz also led the ACC in triples and doubles. His 37-game streak of hitting was the most impressive ever recorded in NCAA Division I in 1990. Additionally, his incredible streak of hitting was the second-longest of its kind in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) history. It also was the second longest in Clemson history behind Hall of Fame (HOF) Rusty Adkins. Kowitz was second in the ACC in batting average , and was named to his way onto the ACC All-Star group as an infielder. Kowitz was also selected to the ACC All-Star team. Kowitz was selected for the All Regional Team in Austin TX in their attempt to qualify for the College World Series. Kowitz is also ACC ALL Tournament Team selection. Baseball America named him as the second team All-American outfielder. Kowitz was a part of a 37-game hitting streak that was the 2nd longest of Clemson the university’s game history. In the year 2019 Kowitz was admitted into the Clemson “Hall of Fame”.
On December 5, 1994 he was again drafted by the Minnesota Twins as part of the Rule 5 draft but was sent back to the Braves on April 25 of that year when he failed to stay on 25-man major league roster.
He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 8th round of the 1990 amateur draft. Kowitz was promoted to the Atlanta Braves on June 3, 1995 when All-Star outfielder David Justice was put on the disabled list. Kowitz made his debut the very next day. He was used a pinch hitter in the 5th inning, in a game against the Houston Astros. He doubled down the left-field line for his first at bat, but the Braves lost 6-2. He appeared in only 9 more games, until David Justice returned, then Kowitz returned to Richmond. Kowitz’s coach was Ned Yost who later became the head coach for the World Series Champions, Kansas City Royals.
Kowitz began his career in minor leagues as a left-handed infielder for the rookie league of 1990 Pulaski Braves. Kowitz batted .324/.382/.538 and had 13 steals over 43 games. He was ranked 8th in the Appalachian League in average and was named to the Appalachian All-Star team as an outfielder. He was chosen as the 8th most promising player in the league by the manager.

Kowitz was born living in Baltimore, Maryland, and is married to two children, a boy and one girl. He was a student at Jemicy in 1982, and graduated from Boys’ Latin School in Maryland at Baltimore, Maryland in 1987 and played the varsity basketball, football, and baseball. Kowitz received an athletic scholarship to play baseball at Clemson University, where he took home the ACC Championship, earned All ACC and Academic All American honors, as well as an ACC player of the Year award , as along with All American honors. Kowitz attended Clemson and, as a freshman in 1988 Kowitz was awarded one of the first outfield positions with the Tigers and took home a thrilling match against the Georgia Bulldogs at home with an explosive hit over the wall in center field at the final inning of the 10th to beat Georgia Bulldogs. Kowitz was a ACC ALL Tournament Team selection in the freshman year. In 1989, as a sophomore, Kowitz was named to the ACC ALL Tournament Team and to the second team of the All ACC Team. Clemson was the winner of it the ACC Championship.
Before the end of the season, he was promoted to Class AA Greenville. Kowitz started the 1991 season with the Class A Durham Bulls where he hit .254/.303/.353 with 18 steals. He returned to Durham once more in 1992 and posted a .301/.373/.429 line with 22 steals. He was 6th in the Carolina League in average and made the league’s All-Star team. He became a regular for the Greenville club in 1993 and batted .278/.363/.378 with 13 steals. He made it to AAA that year with the Richmond Braves and batted .267/.340/.422 for Richmond, scoring 10 runs in 12 games with them.
