Brian Boyd (born 30 July 1952) is a professor of literature , known for his expertise on the life and work of the author Vladimir Nabokov and on literature and the evolution of literature. The professor is also a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of English at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

In the 90s Boyd Edited Nabokov’s English language novels as well as memoirs to be published by the Library of America (3 vols. 1996) and, along with the lepidopterist Robert Michael Pyle, Nabokov’s writings on butterflies (Nabokov’s Butterflies, 2000). He also began writing a biographie of the Philosopher Karl Popper, and work on evolution and literature.

In 2009 he published On the Origin of Stories: Evolution, Cognition and Fiction. Once compared in scope with Northrop Frye’s Anatomy of Criticism (1957), On the Origin of Stories proposes that art and storytelling are adaptations and derive from play. It also shows evolutionary literary criticism in practice in studies of Homer’s Odyssey and Dr. Seuss’s Horton Hears a Who!.

Boyd’s On the Origin of Stories helped precipitate an exhibition, On the Origin of Art, at the Museum of Old and New Art (Hobart, Australia) in 2016-17, in which he was one of four co-curators, the others being Marc Changizi, Geoffrey Miller and Steven Pinker.

In 1979, Boyd completed an PhD from the University of Toronto with a dissertation on the novel by Vladimir Nabokov, Ada or Ardor: A Family Chronicle set in the background of Nabokov’s epistemology metaphysics, ethics, and. The following year, he was awarded an assistant professorship in the University of Auckland (on New Zealand novelist Maurice Gee) before being appointed an instructor in English in the year 1980.
